The Ustilago hordei–Barley Interaction is a Versatile System for Characterization of Fungal Effectors

Obligate biotrophic fungal pathogens, such as Blumeria graminis and Puccinia graminis, are amongst the most devastating plant causing dramatic yield losses in many economically important crops worldwide. However, a lack of reliable tools for efficient genetic transformation has hampered studies into molecular basis their virulence or pathogenicity. In this study, we present Ustilago hordei–barley pathosystem model to characterize effectors from different pathogenic fungi. We generate U. hordei solopathogenic strains, which form infectious filaments without presence compatible mating partner. Solopathogenic strains suitable heterologous expression system factors. A highly Crispr/Cas9 gene editing is made available hordei. addition, infection structures during barley colonization analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, showing that forms intracellular sharing high similarity haustoria formed by obligate rust powdery mildew Thus, potential platform functional effector proteins barley.
